How Do I Figure Out What Style My Art Is

NEW: Too lazy to read this post? I got a video for that.

What is Your Art Style?

Fine art styles are learned, adopted, manipulated, and adult over fourth dimension. Sometimes on accident, sometimes on purpose, but frequently times both.

Your style is a combination of your voice, techniques, color choices, compositions, subject affair, media, and more all wrapped up. Your manner is what binds each of your pieces together into a unique and cohesive drove. The best part is that it continues to evolve over time.  Even when you lot've constitute it, it starts to alter.

We can larn then much from looking at our own art. If you are unsure if y'all've found your mode, start by asking yourself a few questions:

  • Are there elements of design that tie your pieces together?
  • What themes show up in your fine art nigh often?
  • What kind of subjects are you drawn to? Many or a few?
  • What kind of art do yous savor creating at the moment?
  • Does your art stand out confronting the work of other artists?

Manner Development Doesn't Happen Overnight

I tin can ever tell when someone is still in the exploratory phase of their art. When an artist jumps around betwixt many subjects, or when their pieces are lined up together and appear as if a they all could come from different artists, I know they oasis't quite figured out their style still.

There'south absolutely nothing wrong with this! It takes time and a lot of work. And then, if y'all are currently looking for your style, I've created a worksheet to help you brainstorm and collect your thoughts as you read this mail.

How practice artists find their style?

First, no artist or creator is completely original. Inspiration for our styles comes from the globe around united states and what we choose to expose ourselves to.  Information technology doesn't develop out of thin air. The simple formula for finding your mode is to accept in stimuli from the outside world and twist and shape it into something new with your heed and your hands. Repeat this over and over in a variety of means.

And:

Copy the Artists Y'all Like

Simply a bunch of them. If y'all copy one exactly, y'all are ripping them off. But if you have partial ideas from multiple artists, then you are able to make something unique.

If yous oasis't already, yous need to read "Steal Like an Artist" by Austin Kleon. (<–Affiliate Link for Amazon) Information technology's full of helpful creative advice.

Every artist gets asked the question "Where practice you get your ideas?"

The honest artist answers, "I steal them."

Austin Kleon "Steal Like an Artist"

If y'all are drawn to a certain artist'southward work, it's probably stimulating role of your style. When I first started cartoon as a teen, I was obsessed with the art of Brandon Boyd. To this mean solar day, I accept to credit him for my obsession with line work. In higher, I fell in honey with Alphonse Mucha and Fine art Nouveau. In 2017, when I got into fluid painting, I was naturally inspired by Emma Lindstrom. Y'all can see their influences in my work, just yous tin can also see that my fashion does non look exactly similar theirs.

Take niggling mode elements from whatever source y'all tin can. The more, the merrier.

Copy the World Effectually Yous

Mimic nature. Study light, form, color, and shape. Accept figure drawing classes. Ready upwards a withal life in your living room. Working on your technical skills regularly will introduce you to new perspectives and style paths.

Do, Practice, Practice.

If you are just doing art in your head  (chronic procrastinators know what I'thou talking about!), your fashion won't develop. If you only do fine art  a couple of times a month or less, yous won't see much progress. Try to create as oft as you lot tin can. Every day is best, but a few times a week works too.

Step Out of Your Comfort Zone

Push your skills. Draw with your not-dominant paw. Study a diversity of subject area thing. Work big. Piece of work small. Explore loose and fast sketching. Practice tight and slow sketching. If yous don't know what you similar doing yet, then practice as many skills as y'all can.

If you plan on or accept already taken college art classes, you lot larn that instructors assign exercises in as many styles as they can fit into a semester. They assume you have no idea who you are as an artist, so they push you lot in every direction to assistance you develop your unique voice.

Make Time to Play

Release expectations and simply take fun. When you lot have a precise vision for what you desire to create, you lot limit your perspective and create a blind spot. I've gear up out to create one thing, 'screwed information technology up', and created something entirely different that I loved and now incorporate into my style. If I would accept stuck to my expectations, I would take considered this a failure.

Surprising things can happen when we get more playful and just let art happen.

Call up That information technology Takes Fourth dimension

Finding your way often involves knowing who you are equally a person and embracing it. It sounds cheesy, simply existence an creative person isn't just a career or hobby, it'due south a lifestyle. The more y'all weave art into your daily life and your personality into your art, the easier it will be to cultivate your mode, but all of this takes time.

You don't demand to rush it.

Creating and showcasing your personal style is a wonderful achievement. Some artists develop early, and some take years to discover their rhythm and vocalisation. Any footstep yous need to work at is the right footstep. Honestly, I'thou however working on mine.

Don't try to forcefulness your style, but exercise your art muscles whenever you tin can.
